Endlich Streifen!

Stripes! At last!

Ich habe mir etwas gegönnt.

I got myself a treat.

Yarn, of course! What else. But yes, of course it’s a special yarn. Self striping yarn tob e precise!

Long I’ve been thinking about buying this yarn: http://trailingclouds.bigcartel.com/

What’s special is that it’s handdyed yarn with stripes in six different colours. But you can also get it with 12 different colours – to be precise the colours of the London Tube plan. But I chose a yarn with “only” 6 colours. Orange, yellow, stone, light blue, dark blue, green. And it’s not just wool, it’s made of British Bluefaced Leicester wool. At least it feels different. And it’s great to knit with!

Sadly the yarn is quite expensice. For one skein I payed 16.50£ + shipping – I think about 27€. That’s a lot of money for one skein.

Ich will ja zwischendurch anprobieren!

I’m knitting socks because I want stripy socks. Therefor I also bought plain black sock yarn – Lang Yarns Jawoll Superwash – to knit toes, heels and cuffs with. It’s no special yarn. Sadly it doesn’t knit as nice and I got the same problem as I do with Regia sock yarn. The yarn is too soft and for some time the toes looked too big. Several stripes of the stripy yarn later I could relax and even had to increase stitches. Well, it’s black yarn after all and you do not see the knitting very well. I had to cast on three times for the toes… I ended up with 56 sts.

About knitting with the yarn:

One small problem with the Trailing Clouds yarn I already got to know. Since I had to start several times and already had started with the stripy yarn you can tell that from looking at the yarn now. The knitting is kind of uneven – it‘s not as forgiving. Additionally it seems to be more twisted than others. But I think that maybe when wearing and after washing it will be okay.

With another sock pattern – Fruit Stripe Gum Socks – I learned a new instep modification. A fitted instep it is called and means that the part between toe and heel gets tighter. The sock should fit better then. Great, since mine are always too loose at this point.

With my stripy socks now I also wanted to do that. After that I just worked until the heels and in a nerve-racking process worked a short row heel – with German Short Rows – without knitting the foot sts in black – with German short rows you usually work one half of the heel, then knit one row over the short rows and the sts on top and then you work the second part. This would mean knitting the top sts with the same yarn as the heel. Means I did some fancy back and forth knitting and did the top sts with my stripy yarn. It was complicated. But: When trying them on I decided they seem too small. And too tight! 56 sts AND the fitted instep together may be too much. So I put in some life lines – short before I had started the fitted instep – and frogged both socks until this point. My poor “perfect” heel ;(.

In the second or rather 4th attempt I now have increased to 60 sts from where I started again and short before the heel again to 64 sts. The heel now is an Afterthought Heel which I already attached. I want to try them on while knitting!

Ja… Perfekt also. J

Well… Then I realised that studying for exams works much better when knitting at the same time. It keeps me at my desk and I can concentrate better. Of course it only works with easy patterns or stockinette/garter stitch. I knitted “Miss Winkle” while studying and a hat for my mom. I also started a Leftie but it does not knit up as quick as Miss Winkle did. Maybe it’s the yarn. For Miss Winkle I used Louisa Harding Amitola – a merino/silk yanr with 500m/100g but actually seems quite fluffy and thicker. I used a 3,5mm needle and I’m quite happy about the outcome. Although I nearly gave it up after the first loop since I couldn’t get it to twist in the right direction. And the colour changes got a lot shorted since the rows get longer with this construction. Nevertheless I like it. The yarn’s colours include a nice coral pink, a light blue – I even have matching nail polish – a dark greenish nearly black and a nice teal. My mom said, “These are your colours.” And I only had 20cm left! J

For the Leftie I bought white fingering merino wool – 100g – and searched my leftovers from other projects what I could use for the stripes. Now it’s the red Wollfaktor yarn from the MKAL and Araucania Botany Lace in turquoise and dark green – one of these I’d also used for the MKAL and both for the Leaf Press Shawl. So they really are leftovers. I started with red, then turquoise and dark green and so on. But I’m not finished yet…

By the way I will take part in a doll making class at Mariengold in Berlin on Nov 1 and 2! I will make a 40cm doll there. For this I have to have clothing. The ebook with the boys’ patterns I already got from Mariengold. My mom already made some underwear – she has a sewing mashine, I do not. And for the last three days I made a pair of trousers/pants  – a bib overall – and I’m thrilled! It was fast and the pattern was – besides one part – well written. For this I also used leftover yarn. Well, not really scrapyarn though. In my stash I found some cotton yarn from HWF – two strands hold together – in jeans blue. I used about 118g. My gauge was about right and the yarn had a similar yardage as suggested by the pattern. Still I used about 18g more but that’s not bad. Cotton itself is quite heavy.

Well, if it will be a boy or a girl I cannot tell yet. But: the skin will be apricot and the hair sandy coloured.
